Almost inevitably, Mansfield Town's Player of the Season John Mullins has turned down the offer of a new contract at the club.
Mullins is aged under 24 and so would command a fee, set by a transfer tribunal, if he moves on.

But Mullins said: "I have enjoyed my time here but I want to stay in the League and play at as high a level I can.

"I think I have done okay and I don't want people to think I am going for the wrong reasons. It is purely for my career.

"It has been a difficult season with being relegated. But now I have got to look to the future and hope I can stay in the league. That's where most people want to be. I want to challenge for titles and be successful."

The official Stags web site this afternoon suggested they would meet Mullins and his agent to offer an improved deal, but it is almost certain nothing will change the impressive young defender's mind.

Stags boss Paul Holland said: "I would love to keep him here. But John is one who can play in the Football League and at a higher level than last season.

"To be fair to him he deserves to go and play a lot higher."

Cant blame Mulls ONE LITTLE BIT...Thanks for giving MTFC your ALL....I,for one, will be sad to see him go,because I believe he was by far our best player (even better than Mickey B).I hope he finds a club that brings HIM some success......However,PLEASE,PLEASE not one of our Local Rivals.GOOD LUCK JOHN BOY

I knew this was going to happen. Cheers John for all you've done, you deserve to be playing at higher level. You was one of the few who actually tried on the pitch!

Are we actually going to get any players then?

How much longer are we going to wait?

Who is actually going to want to come to play for Mansfield Town?

How do you convince someone to come to the club the way how our club is going?

Are we going to have a club next season?

We only have three players in the squad at the moment!!! Why not change our name to Jason White, Nathan Arnold and Ashley Kitchen Football Club?

Isn't there One business man (woman)who is willing to take on the Stags? You love the business the club brings to the town now it is pay back time. Ofcourse you have to be a football fan and above all love the Stags, a club, that the supporters have held together over the years. I have very fond memories that will never die, 30's-40's50's 60's my favourites. The modern supports have their memories to....Are they all to be just that, memories? But, if and when we do get a new gaffer, please-please-please you banner wavers, shouters, grumblers, give the bloke a chance,no, i dont know who it will be but if you want a football club just use your head for what it is supposed to be used for...thinking! Think what you would do if it were you and your cash???? Dont get screaming for his head as soon as things go wrong. After all it is only game..so enjoy it! good luck the Stags!
