BILLY McEwan was left rueing Stags' poor luck once more as Stags crashed 1-0 at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday afternoon.
The struggling Gloucestershire side won with a superb Alex Lawless strike but, tellingly, their man of the match was keeper Terry Burton, whose stops included a penalty save to deny Adnan Ahmed.

  • Forest Green Rovers 1 Mansfield Town 0

"We created more chances today, particularly second half, than we have done for a few games," he said.

"But their keeper had made three magnificent saves and you have to stick a penalty away. That would have brought us back in it.

"The goal they got was a great strike though we have got to look at the marking.

"Paddy made one save with his legs in the first half but he had nothing to do second half - he had frostbite! They had one good chance second half which they put wide and I thought then we would be all right.

"We played some decent stuff today, but we are not ruthless enough. We lacked that killer instinct to put them to bed, even though we knew they'd been struggling recently. It was the same old story about sticking the ball in the net.

"All we can do is soldier on. We went with three up front away from home and we just needed a breakthrough. We threw a lot of bodies forward and almost got caught out when we were forcing it near the end. We still had enough chances to get something out of this one.

"I know Jim Harvey and he has some decent players here. You could see in glimpses today that some of them could hurt you.

"Early in the season they were top of the table but four or five
injuries and all of a sudden they have slid down the table."

Hear this game discussed as part of this week's free Stags Talk podcast, available here every Thursday.

The defeat saw Mansfield slip to a point above the drop zone again and McEwan added: "Of course we are concerned about the table. I am more concerned about not winning matches.

"But there are still plenty of points to play for. If people want to panic that's up to them but we are not panicking.

"The only thing that will turn it round for us is character - and I do believe this group of players have that.

"We have the belief that we will turn it rounds and there are good times ahead. It won't be easy, it's all about hard work and dedication. Things are very difficult right now."

Mr McEwan..PLEASE NOTE;....WE`VE BEEN HERE BEFORE!!!!!
This is so much a reminder of last season!!!!
All we ever here is EXCUSES,EXCUSES,EXCUSES......Just like we heard last season from the other Billy & what happened?????
YES,WE WENT DOWN!!!!!!!!
FOR CHRIST`S SAKE MR PERRY & CO. GET IT SORTED BEFORE WE SUFFER THE SAME FATE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I`ll bet the opposition Managers just have to read out McEwan`s pre match comments to inspire them.He TALKS UP our opponents all the time,no matter how poor they are!
Forest Green hadn`t won any of their last 12 games, yet he tells us they`re a good team.
Get a grip on reality or take a walk!!!!!!
I believe York are after a new Manager.
PLEASE,PLEASE APPLY!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you forgot Billy, didn't you set a target of 4 points from the two away games? You must also realise the FA have still to decide what to do with us so yes the supporters ARE panicking. Wake up and get real. Thought we were rubbish yesterday. It's alright having chances but you don't get three points unless you make some of them count!

the only thing i carnt understand is why do we keep starting jason lee cos 1.he dont score goals and 2.he just gives free kicks away.why on earth we arent starting STALLARD cos as soon as he comes on pitch 9/10 he scores.this season feels 10 times worse than last season.i think we are goin down if we dnt get a grip of ourselves!!

Swanny,THIS IS 10 TIMES WORSE!!!!!
Last season`s team would have "Walked" this League!
The players we`ve got now are not as good, but they`re not THAT bad,so where does the problem lie???????
Just look at the top 2......Burton & Histon....For god`s sake, neither were GOOD sides when we played them,so what does that say about us???

Spiritater,where are you???????
Hope it aint that bad that you`ve "topped" yourself!!!

Guys,
Why do you think that Billy is not panicking? Is it the usual case with the football profession. Those that are succesful win new contracts, those that are unsuccessful (ie FAILURES) get sacked and their contracts get paid up. Lets get real here, Perry and Co cannot afford to pay Billy off (and why should they when they dont even own the football club yet). There is no way out of this mess unfortunately and I agree with every one of you that Blue Square North beckons unless Billy has some pride in his performance and leaves (or improves - which I hope he does). No team fears MTFC and our budget must be in the Top 3 in the Division. Look at what has happened recently at Salisbury and Weymouth, they are financially crippled and they aren't having too many less supporters attending than ourselves.
Come the next few weeks we will see the true level of support for the club (and I am not criticising anyone for not attending these shocking performances) and this will give the owners a realistic figure of whether they can make this football club pay. I think not. There is still not enough coming from the football club for the community, not exactly any pride in saying you are a Stag at present.
If we aren't good enough then fine - BUT PLEASE PUT SOME EFFORT IN AND HAVE SOME FAITH IN YOUR OWN ABILITY (you know who you are!!!!)

Having slept on it, if we win at Weymouth and get back to 4-4-2 with Ahmed still at the Mill, we will make the play-offs. We have some good players here for this level - we just need to be playing 4-4-2 and use the pace of sinclair, o'connor, arnold and the craft of ahmed. Yesterday if we had stuck away the pen we would probably have won, we will win at Weymouth and make Wembley. I still believe.
