The home side, who finished the game with 10 men after Kevin Gray was dismissed on 75 minutes for a flying tackle on Simon Brown, had only picked up one point from their previous three games and hadn't won at home since September.
But their third home win of the season was completed by the two-goal salvo as Stags worked hard but ultimately failed to cause enough problems for Barry Roche at the other end as they continue to search for a first away League win since early March,
Stags made one change with Rory Boulding dropping to the bench and Arnold back in the starting line-up. He played wide right with Hamshaw switching to wide left.
The tackles were flying in from the off as Jelleyman was dispossessed and then Buxton won the ball back from Lester.
Soon after a dangerous Ward cross from the left flew through the six yard box with no one able to connect.
Roche safely smothered a low Brown cross from the right on seven minutes.
Boulding won the Stags' first corner on 10 minutes but Hamshaw took it short to Arnold and his cross from the return pass saw an offside flag raised.
Roche clawed away a Hamshaw free kick soon after as Mansfield asked the early questions.
The first shot at goal came on 15 minutes as Dawson found Boulding just outside the box and his low effort on the turn was safely smothered by Roche.
Leven saw the game's first yellow card for leaving his foot in on Buxton on 24 minutes.
A long ball down the centre from John-Baptiste sent Brown on a run which ended with a disappointing low shot dragged wide of the far post.
The home side won a free kick on the left of the box which saw Ward whip the ball comfortably wide of the far post.
On 29 minutes John-Baptiste conceded a corner which Ward sent over and Kovacs was allowed a free header which thankfully sailed just over the top.
A second Stags corner arrived on 33 minutes but again it was wasted, this time the whistle going for pushing.
A delightful lofted pass on the turn by Lester almost got Ward in on goal but Buxton was there to get in a great challenge and force him to shoot wide.
Leven had a go from 25 yards on 38 minutes which brought the first save of the game from Muggleton as he dived to his left to gather.
Mansfield survived two successive Chesterfield corners as we entered the last four minutes of a tense first half.
Hamshaw cut inside two challenges on the left before trying a curling effort which Gray headed away.
In the last minute of the half Mullins saw a yellow card for his challenge on Robertson.
Chesterfield piled on the pressure in stoppage time and, amid a scramble, Mansfield were relieved to hear a whistle blow for a foul on Muggleton as the keeper dropped a cross.
Bastians ended the half limping and the Forest loanee was replaced by Fletcher for the second half.
Boulding almost broke the deadlock within two minutes as he raced away onto a Dawson ball and flicked a low shot wide of the far post.
A Stags corner then saw Hamshaw's kick headed out towards D'Laryea who hurried a shot high and wide.
Ward and the home fans wanted a penalty as he went down with back to goal in the box with Buxton, Mullins and John-Baptiste defending strongly but the referee saw nothing untoward.
On 51 minutes the game's best chance opened up as Lester helped the ball on to Ward who bundled a shot wide of Muggleton's right hand post.
But a minute later the home side went in front. Picken's through ball saw Lester outpace John-Baptiste down the centre before dispatching a superb clinical finish past Muggleton.
There were nervous moments for the Spireites as they failed to clear a Hamshaw corner. But a brief scramble ended with Brown's flick going wide.
But disaster struck on 61 minutes as the home side grabbed a killer second. Winter floated a lovely ball out wide on the left to Ward who cut inside Mullins and crashed the ball home low just inside the near post.
Mansfield were right up against it now and two home corners followed as Chesterfield went for the jugular.
Ward got a head onto a long Robertson free kick at the far post but Muggleton was well placed to grab it.
Then a Leven throw was headed on by Fletcher and bounced through a crowded six yard box and just wide of the back stick.
Stags introduced young striker Rory Boulding into the action in place of Jelleyman for the last 20 minutes as they went with three up front.
On 73 minutes Lester thought he had made it 3-0 as he waltzed round Muggleton in vintage fashion from Ward's pass only to have the effort wiped out for offside.
However, the home side were down to 10 men with 15 minutes left as former Stags skipper Gray went in late on Brown and the expected yellow card turned out to be a straight red.
Lester was withdrawn and Downes sent on for the home side.
Dawson was lectured for a foul and soon after conceded another with his challenge on Leven which earned him an inevitable booking.
Another Stags striker joined the action on 80 as Holmes came on for D'Laryea.
The challenges were flying in now and Brown was booked for his rash challenge on Picken on 82.
Dawson stayed down after a tackle and eventually limped off to be replaced by McIntosh. His first touch was to curl a free kick over the bar.
John-Baptiste screwed a shot well wide from Holmes' lay-off as time began to run out for Mansfield.
Hamshaw almost grabbed a consolation in the last minute as a neat pass from Holmes gave him sight of goal and Hamshaw's first time shot was only just wide of the far post.
