A PASSIONATE Stags fan living in Australia has turned his back on Field Mill because of the Keith Haslam factor - despite flying thousands of miles to watch Mansfield Town play.
Former Mansfield man Peter Passant (59) regularly travels to England from his home Down Under at least twice a year to see the Stags in action.

His next trip will be at Easter - but he has vowed to stay away from the Easter Saturday home match against Grimsby and the April Fool's Day home clash with Wrexham in protest at the actions of the football club's controversial owner.

Peter, like hundreds of Stags fans, is angered at last Tuesday's Haslam smoking row at Field Mill - and the owner's general stewardship of the Stags.

He said: "This hurts me immensely, but I will not put another penny into the pockets of Keith Haslam. I will be attending the away games at Bury and Notts County and would normally have stayed a couple of extra days just to get the home game against Wrexham (1st April).

"If Mr Haslam is still there I will be saving the expense of going to the game and staying in a hotel for an additional two nights. My next scheduled trip is at the end of August and if he is still involved I may not even bother.

"His actions on Tuesday night (the cigar row during the Morecambe match) have put him even lower in my esteem - and I did not think that this was possible."

Sponsor

Peter is such an avid Stags fans that his house in Australia has the name 'Field Mill' and his car registration is MTFC. He is also an original member in the 'Wall of Fame' and used to sponsor goals scored even though he didn't get to see many of them!

He is also an Amber member of the Stags Supporters Association (SSA), a Silver member of TEAM Mansfield and, as far ago as 1983, was match ball sponsor for the home game against York City.

Peter - a former Brunts School pupil - used to live on Brownlow Road, then Ladybrook Lane and finally Beck Crescent in Mansfield, before moving to live in Carlton and subsequently emigrating in 1978.

He works in the IT industry and has been a Stags fan for more than 50 years, remembering seeing Denis Wright in goal and Don Bradley in the number 3 shirt.

He added: "Football is a game for the supporters of Mansfield, not the owner of Mansfield".

I had the pleasure of meeting Peter a few years ago and he came across as great bloke who is as passionate about the Stags as anyone I know. I agree with his views and stance 100%. If Peter can stay away having made the journey from Australia what excuse has anyone got who lives down the road? Staying away hurts all Stags fans alike and does not make them any less a fan than someone who keeps attending. It is everyones personal choice but i feel in the end it comes down to the strength of feeling of the individual and the moral issues about financing Mr Haslams ownership of the club. For these reasons, I too have not attended Field Mill since October and have no itention of doing so until Mr Haslam has gone (and yes, I have attended regular away games since October).

I really feel sorry for fans like Peter who are missing the home games because of the antics of Keith Haslam. However I admire his stance and hope to bump into him at the County game.

Someone give him a Haslam Out scarf !

Despite the seemingly globilisation of the Haslam Out debacle, he still hangs on in there, blissfully oblivious to all. Conspiracy theorists might also draw addded store from the fact that the Spirite Magistrates have ensured that he will be available to heap further embarrassments on us all by allowing him to travel to all the games for the rest of this season......
