FULL Back Paul Hurst has turned down the chance to play Blue Square Premier football with Mansfield Town this season and opted to join UniBond Premier neighbours Ilkeston Town instead.
Formerly of Rotherham United, Hurst (33) featured in several recent pre-season friendlies but manager Billy McEwan said on Monday afternoon: "He just phoned me up and told me he was going elsewhere and it was a bit of a blow.

""We made him a offer which I thought he might have taken. But obviously the money was not enough.

"He can go part-time at Ilkeston and get another job as well, and earn more than we can offer him.

"I couldn't offer him more. I have to be careful with the pennies as it's not like we only have to bring in one or two more players. We need to bring a lot in still."

McEwan was bemused by BBC reports that Mark McGregor had not been offered a deal at Mansfield and ended up touting for a club via internet social forum Facebook - which won him a deal at Conference rivals Altrincham.

"We did make Mark an offer – but not what he was looking for," said McEwan.

"It was also a risky one as he was travelling over from Cheshire which is a couple of hours' driving.

"I like my players to try to be as near the club as possible. He would have spent more time in the car then on the training ground, which is not ideal.

"But he did come along and show us what he could do and I did want him to stay."

i find it a little strange that players would rather play at ilkeston than mansfield. what are we offering players? makes mansfield town appear a very small club even in non league

Not looking good and worrying.
I read the comments on some of the new players and now we have the so called better ones going to Ilkeston and Altrincham! And we are thrashed 3.0 at Boston! It would be good to hear some positive news for a change.Surely, the new owners must be desperately worried.

Even if Billy isnt worried....he must be because we seem to be going the same way as York, or maybe worse!Never mind this flannel about Sir Alex respecting lower league Managers, concentrate on the job Billy and MAKE IT HAPPEN. Surely you learned something from the York debacle.Dont take us the same way or we'll be playing Forest Town next.

Don't panic boys. It's a well known fact that players can earn more going part time and getting a job than f time at this level. This is a season for building a club...let him get on with it plse

I think we should be concerned at this stage.Billy hasnt had as long to get the team together,Plus a poor training facility. It is a worry to see players going to other so called smaller clubs.Boston was certainly a reality check. In three matches 9 goals agains three scored.Last season we scored but couldnt defend.I hope we can get it sorted.I think we have had such a bad time over the last five years its sometimes hard to be positive.Whats the new boys in charge think??

Time is running out fast, looks at the moment that those that played at Boston will play Sat. Only one scenario at Ebbsfleet and the prognosis is not good. Bill get your finger out sharpish we need players.

millionaire owner of Ilkeston is Chek Whyte who,s only recently appointed Dave Holdsworth as manager and promised BSP football at ITFC within 2 years!!!!!
We,ve promised a return to league 2 in 3 years...Perhaps now you,ll understand why Hurst has gone to Ilk.

I hate to say it but if we can not get these type of players we have no chance.....it's alright Haslam selling the club but have these new owners got any clout or cash?! or are they on an ego trip like Haslam was.......I think Alfreton and Ilkeston etc are no worse than us.....money talks.......
I can't see myself going this yr......I am not impressed.....
