STAGS fans have been quick to pay tribute to their former hero Richie Barker following news of his retirement today.
Barker announced his retirement from the game after failing to recover from a long-term knee injury.
Barker (33) became a crowd hero after he scored 40 goals in 95 matches during his 27-month spell at Field Mill, where he was made captain and won player of the year accolades.
Barker announces retirementHe was then controversially sold for £100,000 to Hartlepool United in January 2007 in what he later described as a transfer where he was forced out of the door from the club he loved.
Dean Foulkes of the SSA supporters' group told Chad he would remember Barker as a passionate player who gave his all for the club.
"It is a real shame for Richie, I had heard rumours that this might happen but it is still sad news,"he said.
"He did Mansfield Town proud as a player. He played with the passion that all fans had.
"He always gave it his very best and that is all we could have asked for. I will remember him as being like a fan who had left the stands to play and kept his replica shirt on.
"The F.A Cup victory against Rotherham stands out in my mind. He had a great game and was applauded off by both sets of fans which is the mark of any quality player.
"I also remember being gutted when he left Field Mill. We wish him all the best in his future role. I'm sure whatever he does will be a great success."
And Foulkes also called on Mansfield Town to find some sort of role for Barker within the club.
Said Dean: "Richie was a real ambassador for Mansfield Town when he played.
"The club have honoured Kevin Bird and other club legends and it would be nice if something similar was done for Richie.
"For me he is up there with Phil Stant in the legend category, I am sure he will always be welcome at Field Mill."
