MARK Stallard's stoppage time goal made sure Stags were on Monday celebrating three home wins on the bounce for the first time since April 2006.
The 3-2 win over Northwich Victoria was the third successive game that a decisive goal has been scored right at the death in a Stags game and boss Billy McEwan said: "One thing is for sure - people should not leave our games early!

"Three wins out of three at home is great. All credit to the lads for their efforts. I have nothing but praise for them.

"We mustn't forget this is a new squad and players will take some time to settle.

"I have got to be pleased with the progress made in such a short space of time. But I am under no illusions that we still have a lot of hard work ahead of us for the whole season.

"We are still well short of the levels I am looking for professionally. But I can understand that with the newness of the team.

"Ten points from five games is excellent."

Stags were in charge at 2-0 up at the break but Victoria hit back to level near the end before Stallard struck.

"It was a fantastic finish to the game," said McEwan. "We conceded a disappointing late goal at Barrow on Saturday but we did the same to Northwich today.

"We had chance after chance and I kept thinking 'come on, get it in, and kill them off'. But we just couldn't do it.

"All credit to Northwich. They battled on, got back in he game and made it difficult for us in the second half. So to win it was a relief. I am really proud of them."

McEwan was concerned that, for the second home game on the trot, Mansfield have threatened to let the opposition get something after Stags had been firmly in charge.

"We went through this against Kidderminster and it was something we spoke about at half time today," he said.

"But it seems it may be a kink in the armoury of this squad of players for some reason.

"I said before the game I wanted a clean sheet and I said it again at half time. But we didn't get it.

"We have to work on our defending. We will always make chances. We have to put more thinking into our game. We can't keep giving goals away like we are doing. That is just putting pressure on ourselves that we don't need. We have to defend better."

First half hero was Aaron O'Connor whose two goals in four minutes had given Mansfield a cushion.

"Aaron has not played a lot of football to be fair to the kid and is not match fit, but he came into the arena and got two goal," said McEwan.

"We were disappointed to lose Jason Lee and Michael Blackwood through injury but Aaron came in and has done well for us today."

After missing a crucial chance in the 2-1 defeat at Barrow on Saturday, today's match winner Stallard had several chances including a one on one with the keeper, but left it late before grabbing his fourth goal of the campaign.

"Mark Stallard had enough chances today to win a couple of game, but he did score us the winner," said McEwan.

"He is in there to miss them - I would be more worried if we were not creating chances for him. It is at the other end I am more worried and how we defend as a team."

McEwan said it was too early yet to say if Lee (ankle) and Blackwood (calf) will be fit for next weekend.

Squad players who need match sharpness will be able to get some under their belt when Burton Albion send a side up to Field Mill tomorrow (Tuesday) for a behind-closed-doors reserve friendly at Field Mill.

Right result - in the end. A real game of 2 halves. Who would have thought the visitors would have got back into it on the first half showing but those defensive frailties keep coming back to haunt us. Keep working on it, Billy!!

Jake,I`m not a fan of Jeannin, but I thought he had one of his better games.
COME ON BILLY,you need to strengthen the midfield & defence.the midfielders are allowing the opposition too much space, hence, putting the defenders under undue pressure. After half time they went 4,3,3, but we didnt seem to respond to that.
8 goals conceeded in 5 games does not bode well, considering the teams we`ve played so far.God help us when we come up against the likes of Cambridge & Wrexham.
Nathan needs a kick up the a*se.He`s got the skill but he`s not using it!!!!!TAKE ON THE DEFENDERS.
Still, another 3 points,so we cant be too unhappy.I said I`d be happy to see poor performances,as long as we won,so another 3 on Sat PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone else agree that the standard of teams,so far,in BSPL is pretty poor?
I`d heard many, many times that there`s not a lot between League two & the Conference.
In my opinion the gulf seems MASSIVE!!!!!
We were a poor league 2 side last season but that side we would have "walked" this league(Even with Bucko)!!!!!!!!!!!

Delboy if they were so much better why did they fail to get back to back wins? nevermind 3 in a row why did we only have 1 goalscorer with more than 4 goals, why did we have no natural left footed winger, there were a few players that were better boulding, dawson, mullins, jellymen, hamshaw when he could be bothered.

Alot of fans telling Billy what to do here?
Well i think he has done very well considering he has had to start the team from scratch!!!!
Billy know's the areas what need sorting out, and he is dealing with it!! Fair enough its not getting done as quick as everyone would like, but i think mansfield and Billy are doing alot better than i expected anyway! I think some of the fans are expecting too much of the Stags at the moment! Non on ehas pointed out the fact that they have got 10 points out of a possible of 12????
To me that is bloody brilliant! Considering our track record over the past few seasons.
I know we gave away a couple of soft goals in the opening season, but i think they are doing well as a team so far. They do look abit shakey but this team needs time to bond! and these things take time, you can't expect miracles overnight!
If this sounds like i'm having ago, i'm not, i'm trying to point out a few facts here which some of the fans seem to forget!!

Adam, the simple reason is that League 2 is light years ahead of this Conference sh*te.If what we`ve seen so far is the general standard of this league then I`m very surprised. It seems obvious that there will be 4 or 5 teams that are way better than the rest & could possibly hold their own in league two.(dont think we are one of those just yet)
By the way,you didnt mention Bap.Didnt you rate him?
Also,I believe that McEwan WOULD have saved us if he`d got the job when Deardon went.THOSE PLAYERS NEEDED MOTIVATION,THEY WERE NOT BAD PLAYERS.
Deardon didnt inspire me as a fan,so how could he motivate the players?......Oh yes,He`d just lean against the dug out!!!!!
