STAR striker Micky Boulding smashed the first hat-trick of his Stags career to keep alive Mansfield Town's hopes of avoiding relegation from the Football League.
But after playing his part in the 3-1 fightback victory over Shrewsbury, he told Chad that he could not celebrate the treble - or reaching the 25-goal milestone for the season.

He said: "I can't really enjoy the hat-trick - or the fact I have now got 25 goals this season - until the team is safe. That is all that matters now.

"When we are safe, then I can look back at what I might have achieved this season in terms of goals, but not until then."

Boulding had not trained all week because of a knee injury, and paid tribute to the work of club physio Paul Madin for getting him fit enough to play.

And manager Paul Holland added: "Micky has not trained all week, but came up to me and said that he wanted to play. That just shows the spirit and attitude of the players here.

"They all want to get us out of the hole we are in. We all know we have not been good enough this season, but we all want to put it right."

Boulding had almost 3,000 Stags fans on their feet as he wiped out an early Jason White mistake with a 22nd minute equaliser and then fired the home side in front 14 minutes later - both from Matt Hamshaw crosses.

Then, three minutes from time, with the Stags nervously hanging on, he clinched victory by racing clear onto a Jefferson Louis flick-on and beating the keeper in style.

Afterwards he said: "This was a big win for us with the other teams around us losing.

"We were all up for it before the game and we knew we had to stay positive even after we lost the early goal. We knew that the other teams had tough games.

"We were on top even before Jason's mistake. It was unfortunate and I felt sorry for him, apart from that mistake he was our man of the match.

"But we kept going and the quick equaliser put us back in it.

"It was a simple goal, I just let it hit me to go in. It was a good ball from 'Hammy', as it was for the second goal.

"For the third goal, the keeper made my mind up for me. And I was quite calm, it is easier to be calm when playing than when watching from the sidelines.

"But I can't really enjoy the hat-trick - or the fact I have now got 25 goals this season - until the team is safe. That is all that matters.

"I know it is a cliche, but we have just got to take it one game at a time and we have got to repeat all this next week.

  • The Great Escape! Do you still believe?

"The fans were fantastic today, stuck with us even after the early goal went against us. We need them to do the same next week."

Brilliant player we would be down already without him,i really hope we keep him for next season and that mr haslam doesent decide to sell him for a small profit. We cant afford to lose another player of his quality like we lost barker. Cmon stags lets focus on the next game now and make sure we win so it wasent a waste of time

Please don't go . . . We need him next season whereever we are. Where would we be without his 20-plus goals? And Matty Hamshaw, another great game today. Well done!

'One Micky Boulding' just about sums it up. He's been our saviour. Not that Haslam would ever recognise his true worth. A few more bucks and the Count will be happy to sell him. Haslam proved it once and for all when he sold Barker for way under what he was worth. Just think how he and Boulding would have played together for Stags up front!

What a contrast between the honest loyalty and team spirit of the current players working hard for their manager, most of whom are on a pittance of a wage, and the greedy selfishness of the owner who keeps as much cash as he can so he can drink himself under the table in Portugal. Still think he will sell to Bachelor if he can screw a good enough deal for himself (what on earth will he do with the 2 minibuses when he's banned from driving?)Watch your liver Keith.

At the end of the game Mickey further underlined his class by throwing the match ball into the crowd for one of the fans to keep. A small gesture that says a great deal about the man
