Adlington, who has spent the past six years rigourously training for the games, wrote her name into the record books after she bagged gold medal in the 400m freestyle.

And speaking to Chad from their Ryedale Avenue home delighted mum Kay spoke of her pride in her famous daughter.

Dad Steve told Chad: "It has been an amazing experience for us and to see her standing on the podium and hear the national anthem playing was very emotional.

"It is just amazing that she is the first female gold medal swimmer in so many years and we are hugely proud of her. She has been training hard for the Olympics for the last six years and all her efforts have now come off."

Mum Kay told Chad: "We were just all crying our eyes out. We just can't believe it was our little girl stood up there winning an Olympic gold medal.

"I could not believe it when I saw her touch the wall and see that she had won the race, until then I wasn't sure if she had won.

"It is amazing that she has won in the 400m when it is not even her best event, she was just using it to have some fun and prepare for the 800m.

"We are going to have a big party for her when she gets back home. She loves shoes and chocolate cakes so I want to get her a massive cake shaped like a shoe."

Sister Laura said: "We are still on a high. The house was full of family and we were all screaming and shouting at the TV. We always believed she could do it, but to see her on the podium with the gold medal is amazing. She is my hero now."
