AT just before 5.55pm on Saturday, 3rd May, Mansfield Town finally said a sad farewell to the Football League.
Relegation, of course, had been confirmed a few days earlier - but an abject 2-0 defeat at Dagenham in their last match of the season was, perhaps, an appropriate end to an inglorious season.

No-one felt the pain more than the fans - but at least it was a time for them to reminisce over some of the happier moments of the 77 tears in the Football League.

See how many of those memories and famous faces you can spot in our special audio video slideshow, set of course to the tune Mansfield Magic.

Did I see Kevin Bird - on top of Mick Saxby - heading in a goal from a corner. Yes, Stags defenders did once score goals and as well as keep clean sheets. I remember it well!! Great memories - nice to see Ernie Moss and Kevin Randall from that fantastic day at Wrexham in the 70s when we won the title.

Thanks Chad for the slideshow. Never thought I'd find that corny song such a tear jerker. All those memories. How dare Haslam ruin our club. You're a waster Keith and I'll never forgive you.

You're spot on Mick. Watching it really drives homes just how much that man has ruined this football club. Some fantastic memories - for me who started going to the Mill in the early 80s it was great seeing Ian Greaves at Wembley in 87. What a day that was. You never know we might back there next season in the Trophy. But Keith, you are scum. What you have done to my and thousands of others' football club is nothing short of criminal. They say what goes round, comes round . . . I just hope some form of comuppance (whoever it's spelt) comes your way at some point in your lifetime!

Just consider yourselves lucky that you watched the stags at wembley because i dont think i ever will, and if we did haslam would probably sell the chance to another club, i hope he does get whats coming to him.
Cmon you stags!

Dot: I was there at Wrexham when we won the title in about 1976 (?). My mate was a Wrexham supporter and I had to stand in the Wrexham end. Seem to remember we took about 3000 and I watched our supporters with pride. Think we beat Wrexham at Field Mill the same season - I was at that game too - they had a striker called Kevin Ashurst who terrified our defence, but we held on. Ernie Moss is my favourite ever Stags player (He wasn't that skilful but could he head a ball and he had that knack of scoring crucial goals. Used to joke he must have a bolt in his neck as he looked like Frankenstein).
T. Ellis: I was there with my brother at Wembley when we won the Freight Rover. Another great day out.
Adam999: Hang on in there mate. The good times will come back! Haslam will always be remembered with great bitterness but the Stags will return to their former strength. Just think of some of those moments that I savoured that will come back: drawing 3-3 against Spurs with Glenn Hoddle (I ran on the pitch when we got our third in sheer delight), Steve Wilkinson scoring 6 against Birmingham when their fans nearly came over the wall into the West Stand lower tier but we were laughing so much we didn't care. And, one of my earliest Stags memories as a very little boy, seeing Ken Wagstaff score a hattrick (I think he did, I couldnt see much as I was smaller than most of the supporters then and it was even packed at the front where the kids stood). Field Mill used to be so crowded my parents would only let me go to reserve matches with my uncle. But he persuaded them to let me go and watch Waggie in the first team. I can't remember who we were playing but it seemed a pretty exciting place to be. There was no chance I'd ever support another team after that.
And finally Sweden Stag: you'd better check the above memories -they may be inaccurate. Thanks for all your fascinating analyses of Stags past records. Really interesting.

. . . just read mine back, it should read however it's spelt! Doh!! Some great memories. I was only a child, so some of you older supporters may disagree with me - but the stand out season for me was 85/86 when we went up. It started, Sweden Stag correct me if I'm wrong, with a 4-0 home win over Hereford at the Mill. I remember Keith Cassells, Kevin Kent and Neville Chamberlain as well as George Foster, Tony Lowery, Mark Kearney, Kev Hitchcock etc!! For some reason, games against Port Vale stand out for me and the Swindon home game when they brought thousands because they'd already clinched promotion. Oh well Mr Haslam there's one thing you can't take from us - those wonderful memories!

I remember taking my Dad to see us play Hereford one Boxing Day. He's not a football fan but my brother and I forced him to go as he kept complaining we talked about nothing else but Stags. We warned him that he might get bored. We stood in the North Stand behind the goals and Stags scored 7. I took my son to the return fixture at Edgar Street and it was a 0-0 bore draw. Long journey home that night.

T. Ellis - yes the 85/6 season was great. Those players you mention were special (although we always moaned about Mark Kearney). The year we got into Division 2 (as it was) was my favourite. Must have been about 1978. I had been going all over the country following Peter Morris' team - that's the Ernie Moss era of course. What a great day when we got promotion. Seem to think we beat Northampton at Field Mill. My girlfriend came with me and couldn't believe my bad behaviour. We got married later and she came with to watch Stags through the next season playing some big teams. We've now been married 30 years and she still warns me to behave when I go to matches - and tells my son/daughters to keep an eye on me. I'm not that old and decrepit - honest!
