Wolf Hunt take the sting out the Cobras

With no scheduled Midland League game, Sherwood Wolf Hunt took the opportunity to venture north to take on the second team of well established Rugby League outfit Rochdale Cobras and come away with a 25-18 victory

After the long journey Wolf Hunt would have been forgiven for a slow start, but it was quite the contrary as the forward pack made it clear that they were going to make it a difficult afternoon for the Cobras.

Impressive work from captain Brent Leivers, Gaz Pinnick and Jordan Flynn led to the first try of the afternoon being scored by centre Declan Dykes.

The Cobras threw a lot at the Wolf Hunt defence, but hard work from Dan Littlewood and Mason Hardwick kept the Cobras to just six points in the first half.

The second half was much of the same, both sides not taking a backward step, and thus making it a spectacle for the large crowd that had turned up to see Rugby League’s new boys.

Wolf Hunt went over for a further three tries, made by quick distribution up the middle from hooker Glen Holt and some strong running from Grant Dixon and Kay Bwalya.

In the searing heat, and with the Cobras side resilient until the end, it was inevitable that they would go over for another two tries.

Player coach Adam Bates said: “This was a great achievement for our boys.

“It’s not easy making a long journey like this, but right from the off we were switched on and ready to play rugby and as a result we came away with a win.

“This game wasn’t just about playing rugby, though, it was about establishing links around the Rugby League community, and I feel we’ve come away knowing we gave a good account of ourselves on the day.

“Everybody at Sherwood Wolf Hunt would like to thank Rochdale Cobras for their hospitality, and arranging the game at short notice. It’s important for us to link up with clubs like Cobras, who have only been around for six years, but have achieved huge success both on and off the field.”
