Knitters get the Olympic needle!

A GROUP of local knitters, who meet twice a month in a pub, are going for Olympic glory - with their knitting needles!

The five women from the local Knitting in Notts group are backing the national Woolsack project to produce cushions out of British wool for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Now they are appealing for others to join them in their challenge of knitting at least 20 cushion covers ahead of a ‘stuffing event’ at the Sherwood Forest Art and Craft Centre in Edwinstowe on Sunday 11th March, 10am-4pm.

Woolsack is part of the Cultural Olympiad and those already taking part, as well as the local women, include schools, community groups, individuals, craft groups and farmers.

Making the cushions is designed to help people gain craft skills using a sustainable material and also to learn about the production of British wool.

The group of five avid knitters – Sara Hulse, Kerry Singleton, Ellen Button, Sarah Chambers and Laura Padley - meet at the Robin Hood pub in Edwinstowe twice a month.

Sara explained: “The group is a spin off really from other craft things we were involved with. We have been meeting now for about a year and would love other knitters to join us.

“We all work on lots of different projects at a time – although at the moment we’re concentrating on the Woolsack cushions – and just generally help each out and swap ideas. We started the group because we couldn’t find another knitting group that met in the evenings.”

“When we first started knitting in the pub we were something of a novelty – now most of the regulars are used to us. The pub landlord enjoys seeing what we’re knitting – and as he’s about to become a granddad we’ve all just knitted things for the new baby.”

The five group members come from across the area, including Edwinstowe and Clipstone.

Knitting in Notts meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month. New members are welcome to join the group, contact Sara on 01623 823002, e-mail sara@writecommunications.co.uk
