MANSFIELD’S double Olympic gold medal winner Rebecca Adlington claimed goldat the World Championships in Shanghai on Saturday lunchtime.
Adlington had trailed the Danish swimmer Lotte Fris, before fighting back in the final stages to take gold in her strongest event.
The Mansfield star won in 8.17.51 to take her first world title.
Earlier in the week, Adlington (22) stormed back in the final stages of the women’s 400m freestyle final to finish behind Italian Frederica Pellegrini and take the silver medal.
She had taken bronze in the same event two years ago and said afterwards that she was pleased with the result after struggling in the heats and finishing just seventh.
