VIDEO: Depleted Giants cut down to size by London

Injury-hit Mansfield Giants slumped to an 0-2 record this season with a 77-65 loss at home to London United on Saturday.

The Giants were without point guard Scottie Summersgill, and big men Mark Woodhouse and Edwin Igbinezaka due to injury, as well as Chris McIntyre and Barry Plummer missing due to personal circumstances.

London United found their rhythm early with some perfectly crafted offence.

Parish Xavier kept the Giants in the game with some strong drives to basket, but it was the Londoners that took the first period 21-14.

Dan Richards started attacking the basket well, getting the visitors into early foul trouble, but great help side defence stopped the Giants’ attack.

London started to pull away as they went into the half time break with a 14-point lead.

The Giants stepped up as they changed their defensive tactics, but like in last week’s game struggled to convert any scoring opportunities.

Charles Gamble started to get into the flow of the game, but United didn’t give the Giants anything easy as they still went into the final period maintaining that 14-point lead.

The Giants again picked up their intensity on defence, and managed to cut the lead down to eight. But they again ran out of steam and handed London a 12-point win.

Giants’ top scorers: C. Gamble 21, D. Richards 16, P. Xavier 12.

The Giants travel back to the capital on Sunday to take on the Brixton Topcats.
