Two TT sidecar podiums, but Birchall brothers aiming for better

BEN Birchall admits he has unfinished business on the Isle of Man despite ending his 2012 Tourist Trophy with a pair of podium finishes in the Sure Sidecar showdowns.

Birchall and his passenger and brother Ben ended the second three-lap race of the 37.73mile Mountain Course in third as Dave Molyneux made it 16 TT wins with his second victory of the week.

That capped off a pretty outstanding race week for the Mansfield brothers, former sidecar world champions back in 2009, who also claimed second in Saturday’s opening race.

And Birchall was adamant that he and his brother would be back next year to try and claim that spot on the top step of the podium.

“This has been a fantastic fortnight for us, we’re just delighted to have got our first podiums,” he said.

“We were leading at one point in the first lap and when I saw that on the board I thought ‘right here we go, we’ve got a job on here’, but it wasn’t to be.

“But we love it on the Isle, I’ve never come here and had a bad week and there’s no doubt that we are going to be back next year to have another go.

“We lost a bit of power in laps two and three where the engine started spluttering, I don’t really know why that happened but round this course it can happen anywhere really.

“We will look to push on from here, this year the team and sponsors have never put us under any pressure regarding what to aim for or where we should finish.

“Instead we have focused on the drive and what we need to do and it’s brought us two podiums so that’s fantastic.

“It’s a little bit disappointing that we haven’t managed to go better than we did in the first race but that’s fine.”

The Birchalls have this year been working closely with TT-legend and three-time race winner Klaus Klaffenbock.

And Ben was quick to pay tribute to the progress they have made under the guidance of the man they call Klaffi.

“Klaffi has been great,” he added. “The difference he has made in being around constantly has been huge and we’re so grateful to him and all the rest of the team for the work they have put in.”
