Keen amateur cyclist Ron, who was born in Sutton, competed in many races across the East Midlands, Belguim and France and also won the Leicester Forest Road Race in June 1957.

Ron, who was friends with Tour de France veteran Tommy Simpson, raced between 1952 and 1960 as he attempted to make it as a professional cyclist.

Proud wife Fay said: “Ron had a real ambition to be successful in cycling and it was a real pleasure being at the roadside cheering him on and watching him win races.

“We are all very proud of his achievements. I remember going on our honeymoon to the south of France so we could watch Tommy Simpson in the Tour de France.”

Ron eventually gave up his cycling career to become a successful builder after starting a family.
