More international success for Mansfield-based pool players

Mansfield’s blackball pool players, based at The Towers, Botany Avenue, have enjoyed more international success.

At the European Championships at Bridlington, Kev Seaman won the over-40s singles, beating team mate Micky Turner 7-1 in the final.

He beat last year’s winner, Pat Dolan, from Ireland, 6-5 in the semi-final, after being 3-0 down, to add the European title to the World over-40s title he won in November.

Team mate Ashley Radford won the U23 European single title. Among those he beat on the way were IPA number one-ranked Jordan Shepherd, Kieran Hawkins, ex-U23 European champion, and Daniel Winfield, ex-U18 world champion. He left the best to last, beating Scotland’s World U23 champion and World No.1 Liam Dunster 6-4 in the final.

Nottinghamshire county and England U23 manager Harvey Elmhirst’s U23 team beat world champions Scotland 13-10 in the final to become European champions, Ashley Radford in the winning team.

Also, Harry Wood, and Thomas Wilson, from Notts, lost to Scotland in the final of the U18 Boys team event 13-7, while Greg Davis got to the last 16 of the U18 singles.

Great news for The Towers was that Notts have won the bid to hold the England trials for U18/U23 ladies, men’s and seniors on 25th/26th May.

Nottinghamshire blackball pool also had six members playing for England at Dublin in the Nations Cup, along with U23 team manager Harvey Elmhirst.

He ran two sides, B1 and B2, with B2 making the semi-finals, including Notts’ Haydn Hickling, who won 21 out of 31 to finish top of the B2 averages, while B1 actually won the U23 Nations Cup, beating Scotland 13-9 after being 7-2 down.

The U18 B2, who included Notts trio Greg Davis, Danny Gwynn, and Chris Croft lost 13-6 to Wales in the final, after beating England B1, including Harry Wood, in a close semi 13-12.

Danny Gwynn reached the U18 singles, quarter-finals while Steve Hotchkiss played for the seniors’ B2 and got to the semi-final of the seniors’ singles.

A blackball league is running at The Towers on Monday night. You need five players and you play three lots of five games on a night, so every player gets three games.
