MANSFIELD Hockey Club twice conceded five goals last weekend as they crashed to successive defeats on Saturday and Sunday as they caught up on previously postponed East Midlands Regional Hockey Premier League sponsored by Ener-G games.
Of late, Mansfield have struggled to get going in the first half of games and these two were no different.
On Saturday, they went down 5-0 to top of league Boots before they fell 5-1 to Loughborough Sharks on Sunday.
The start of Saturday’s game was played at a frantic pace and within 10 minutes Boots were two up.
The first goal came from open play when a Boots striker was left unmarked to the left of centre of the D to fire a fierce shot into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
The second came from a short corner when an accurate flick went in off the post.
Mansfield started to get back into the game, but on 29 minutes Boots scored a third after a scramble in the area broke kindly for them.
As the game went on Mansfield grew stronger and created some good chances but couldn’t find the net.
However, two quick goals in the space of two minutes with only five to go wrapped up the points for Boots.
On Sunday it was the turn of Loughborough Sharks to score five against Mansfield, but at least Mansfield managed to score a goal and with a bit more luck could have had a couple more.
Again it the first half that was their undoing as Loughborough scored three without reply.
Loughborough caught Mansfield cold at the start of the second half scoring after only two minutes.
Mansfield won a series of short corners and, from one of them, were awarded to penalty flick. Jason Ward coolly stepped up to shoot home past the stranded keeper.
l Mansfield seconds produced some of their best hockey of the season at home against third-placed Berkswell and Balsall Common, winning 4-0 with goals from Mark Greasby, Neil Hursthouse and Phil Allen (2).
