Mansfield Giants too strong for Leeds Allerton

Mansfield Giants men’s team secured a 119-102 win against Leeds Allerton Force in a fast-paced end to end match at Oak Tree Leisure Centre.

Just one point separated the two teams in the early stages as Giants lead 21-20 points at the end of the first quarter.

Six of Giants players all contributed in this quarter alone, as Giants moved the ball well to score baskets.

The Giants defence started to slip as Gill scored 16 second quarter points for Leeds.

But sharpshooting from Calvin Morant-Hudson and Lance Cresswell in the second quarter from behind the arc and a dominant inside presence from Barry Plummer kept Giants in the game as the game ended the half at 54-54 each.

A determined Giants came out firing in the third quarter as they outscored Leeds 33-22, with most points coming from defensive stops and great team defence. Leeds struggled with stopping Giants fast breaks as Mike Buffalo stepped up for Giants to score 17 points in this quarter with team mate Morant-Hudson contributed 13 points of his own as Giants led 91-76 at the end of the quarter.

In a tense final quarter Leeds never gave up, fighting back at both ends of the court.

Giants took a 20 point lead coming out strong at the start of the quarter, but Leeds battled back scoring nine unanswered points, as the deficit was cut to just 11 points, which saw Giants call an important timeout.

However the leadership of Giants trio Plummer, Morant-Hudson and Buffalo saw Giants battle it out to the end and win the game 119-102.

Giants juniors were in action with the U16’s travelling away to play Rotherham Hawks, where they won 127-39, whilst the U14’s travelled away to play Shopshire Warriors and won 66-31.

Giants men’s next game is this coming sunday against Newcastle Under Lyme College Knights away with the women back in action agaist Bury Bluedevils away on Saturday and then in the quarter final of the women trophy on the Sunday against Oxford.

It is only junior teams in action at home this coming weekend as the U13’s play Leicester Warriors at 12,30pm and U16’s playing Barnsley Leaders at 2.30pm.
