Mansfield Giants ladies team failed to take advantage of a 20-6 lead in the first quarter and went on to lose 64-56 to Bury.

The Giants had enjoyed a great start to the game and moved the ball well to score many fast breaks against Bury.

But the Greater Manchester side came out fighting in the second quarter with Clayden scoring back to back three pointers, as they stepped up their game.

Giants struggled to find momentum defensively with many of Giants players picking up early fouls, which led to being in trouble with team fouls.

Offensively, Giants continued to work well, with Gail Richards creating movement to find Charlotte Levitt inside to score baskets, while Katy Taylor also scored a long three pointer to leave Giants winning 36-23 at half-time.

It was a troubled start to the third quarter and this carried on throughout for Giants. Bury stepped up their defence and Giants struggled to score, as more of Giants players had to sit out, as they picked up fouls, which sent Bury to the free throw line.

Kirsty Russell stepped up to score a three for Giants as Sarah Taylor scored a long jump shot to leave Giants still in control and leading 45-41 going into the fourth quarter.

In a tough and final quarter, Giants failed to stop Bury’s momentum, with Bury moving the ball well, to find open players that scored, as they took a 52-49 lead.

Levitt scored a further basket inside, as S. Taylor scored further long jump shots. As Giants battled to stop Bury scoring Jo Richards and Levitt fouled out, with Bury taking the win 56-64.

Giants now take on Bradford Dragons on Saturday away in the league, with their final home game prior to the festive break being on Saturday 15th December, as they take on Northamptonshire Titans in the women’s National Trophy quarter final.
