MANSFIELD Giants’ women’s side fell to a narrow 51-47 defeat at Bury Blue Devil in their Division Two match.
Giants found it hard at the offensive end, as Bury played aggressive defence to shut the Giants out.
Bury piled the pressure on with all of their starting five scoring, before points from Levitt, Jo Richards and Gail Richards left the visitors trailing 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.
It was a strong second quarter for Giants as Jess Shillito, Levitt and Richards combined to score further points inside, as Bury struggled to contain all three inside the key.
Giants stepped up at the defensive end which saw all of Bury’s points come from long range jump shots, as Giants led at half-time 21-20.
The second half of the match saw a complete different game to the first half, with Giants being penalised for their efforts inside the key from their three big players in J. Richards, Levitt and Shillitot.
They eventually found form towards the end of the quarter combining to score six points. Defensively Giants were in foul trouble again early on in the quarter which saw Bury sent to the free-throw line on numerous occasions, allowing Bury to end the third with a narrow 34-30 lead.
Bury continued to get a number of chances from the free-throw line in the final quarter to stretch their lead.
Giants fought back from a seven point deficit, with Levitt proving unstopable inside and Shillito following in her footsteps, to take a 47-44 lead with under one minute to go.
But G. Richards was fouled out, with Bury awarded further free throws to take the score to 47-46 as Giants’ hopes began to falter.
A series of free-throws helped give Bury five unanswered points to seal victory in a close encounter.
