NEW-look Mansfield Giants are making their final preparations this week as the 2012-2013 basketball season finally arrives this weekend.
On Saturday the senior men kickstart their season with a Patrons Cup game against newly promoted Division Two side Loughborough Student Riders at the Oak Tree Leisure Centre.
Then on Sunday the team take on Division Four team Hull Stringers in the National Cup, also at home.
Head coach Dan Richards said ‘We’ve had the best team preparation we’ve had for a number of years and feel confident we can make an impact on the court this season.
“It’s important that we carry on the high intensity and team work we’ve displayed during pre-season into the Patrons Cup, but this competition also gives us the opportunity to really find our strengths and build on them before the league campaign starts.”
This week Giants added American point guard Chris Gandy along with former Lincoln trio Franklin Saunders, Chris McIntyre and Ashley Rice to the squad.
Richards added: “We are urging as many spectators to come along as possible.
“We have an extremely up tempo, exciting team this year and guarantee you will have a great time.
“It’s a great family atmosphere and the cheerleaders from Spotlight Studios add to the excitement”.
The senior women are also in action this Saturday as they take on the Wellingborough Phoenix in an annual pre-season preparation game.
The two teams compete in different Division Two regions and have often finished in similar league positions.
The women will take to the floor first as they tip-off at 4pm on Saturday, and the senior men’s game will beginstraight after and is scheduled to start at 6pm.
Sunday’s game against Hull has a 2pm tip off.
