Future of golf is bright after boys shine

SUTTON man Brian Saunders celebrated his 11th year as county starter by overseeing the Boys’ Championship which were held at the Notts Golf Club and Coxmoor.

17-year-old Matthew Fitzpatrick from Hallamshire Golf Club, Sheffield, swept to a dominating 10&8 victory in the 36-hole finale.

Brian explained that the showcase demonstrated an improvement in the quality of play in comparison to previous years.

He said: “I think that the tournament went very well personally and some of the performances were extremely impressive.

“It can’t be denied that the standard of play is improving every year as people receive better coaching,.

“It can only be good for the game in the area.”

And 11 years since taking up his position as county starter, Brian is still as keen on the game as when he started.

He continued: “I always caddied in my spare time and so to be involved in the sport is something that I really enjoy doing.”

“I’ve witnessed a wide range of golfing ability across the different age groups but overseeing kids growing up to become world class players is always great to see.”
