AVERAGE attendances for races at Southwell Racecourse soared by 28 per cent in January compared to last year’s figures.
The course saw 5,466 racegoers visit the track in the first week of January 2012, compared to 4,320 for the same period last year.
Course bosses hope the positive figures will mean a very successful first quarter for 2012, with 43 per cent of their meets falling inside the first three months of the year.
Nathan Corden, head of commercial development at Southwell, said: “All indications were that we were looking at an exceptionally good start to the year, but even we were surprised by the final figures for January.
“Marketing and promotion of the racecourse has proved particularly effective. More people, other than the traditional racing fans, have been encouraged to visit and experience what we have to offer and we have found that repeat visits are very easy to secure.
“We have invested extensively in the hospitality offer at Southwell and have attracted an extremely wide customer base as a result. Businesses book for the mix of conference, meeting and catering facilities we can provide alongside the racing calendar and access to the unique golf course on site.”
