March has been a busy month for Mansfield Harriers as the cross country season closes and the summer track and field and road racing seasons approach.
Both Stuart King and Craig Kelly are showing strong promise on the roads, Kelly having finished in 14th place in 82:05 at the Retford Half Marathon and King clocking the third fastest time at the Ed Prickett Relays against strong opposition.
King led home the field on the first leg with a time of 9:52 on the short but challenging loop of Nottingham University campus.
Danny Barkes took over from King for Harriers’ first team recording 10:39 with Chris Brown and Mike Mumford following on in 10:54 and 11:38 respectively – the team finishing in ninth spot overall.
Andy Wilson led team two out, returning with an individual leg of 10:58, Mark Johnson taking over in 11:07. Pete Stafford clocked 11:29 for leg three with Jonny Lowe bringing the quartet home with a personal time of 11:15.
John Bell, Sally Smith and Alan Smith joined Kelly at Retford clocking 1:42.28, 1:55.41 and 2:18.45 respectively.
Away from the roads Martin White and Steve Woolley competed in the British Masters Championships, both returning with medals.
Woolley took gold in the VM55 javelin with a best throw of 37:56, whilst White clocked 24.46 to take bronze in the VM40 200m.
White also made the final of the 60m, clocking 7.57, whilst Woolley was fourth in the discus, fifth in both the hammer and weight and sixth in the shot.
It has been a busy time for Harriers youngsters, many of whom were in action gaining county vests on two successive weekends – the English Schools Championships following on from the Inter-Counties Championships.
Sam Johnson was the highest-placed Harrier at Birmingham’s Cofton Park where the Inter-Counties championships took place, finishing in 84th spot in the U15B event.
There was also a top 100 placing for Sam Barker in the U13B event, the youngster taking 87th spot.
Caelidh Ross just missed out with her 105th place in the U15G with Archie Rayner also securing a top 150 spot in the U13B with his 134th place finish.

Ilton in Somerset was the venue for the English Schools Championships.
Nicole Goulding took top spot there with her 46th place finish in the Junior Girls race, Ella Shirley also making the top 100 with a 98th place in the Intermediate Girls event.
