Ashfield's bonus point win at Demons

Ashfield Ladies set their stall out for the new season with a fine team performance and 55-0 win at Doncaster Demons.

Winger Megan Warsop opened the scoring following great hands down the line of backs, with prop Chip Harrison nailing the first of four conversions.

That set the ball rolling for a barrage of Ashfield tries in their first league game with Doncaster unable to withstand Ashfield’s great team work and domination of the set play.

Vice-captain Leanne Reeves galvanised the forwards into action from the start, while the Ashfield scrums were powerful with hooker Julie Brimelow working hard to win several against the head.

Coach’s player Bek Daft, who consistently took quick tap-penalties and jinked through the defence, was rewarded with a try.

Captain Leonie Cruxon powered through defenders into the 22 and also sprinted for the line to score.

Number eight Leanne Reeves scored two tries through her strong running and kicked a conversion.

Flanker Elena Martin-Lopez highlighted the need for great support running and communication, deftly catching an offload from Reeves to fly over.

In the second half Warsop completed her hat-trick.

When Doncaster managed to get their hands on the ball they looked threatening, but that was dealt with effectively by the whole Ashfield squad.

That was epitomised by flanker Chloe Alvey’s work rate around the park and replacement full back Steph Hancock’s try-saving tackles.

The penultimate try was scored by the coach’s forward of the match, second rower Nic Wallace.

Ashfield Ladies play their first home game at Larwood Park on Sunday, 24th September against Harrogate. New players and supporters are welcome.
