VIDEO: Former Stags star Syrett dies

In the 1977-78 football season, the forward was a part of the Stags team which competed in the second tier of English football for the only time in the club’s proud history.

Starting his career as an apprentice at Swindon Town, Salisbury-born Syrett was one of Peter Morris’ major signings at Mansfield ahead of the aforementioned campaign.

A former England youth international, Syrett was a regular in the line-up at the County Ground under former Stags manager Danny Williams, before his permanent move to north Nottinghamshire in 1977.

He struck up an impressive partnership with Ernie Moss and netted 16 League goals in 42 appearances during his debut season at the Stags, but it was not enough to save Mansfield from relegation.

He will forever be remembered by the Stags’ faithful for scoring a famous hat-trick against Spurs in an unforgettable 3-3 draw at Field Mill.

The following season, Syrett scored four goals in Division Three (now League One), before moving to Walsall as part of a deal that brought Terry Austin to Mansfield.

Syrett also had spells at Wolves, Peterborough United and Northampton Town.

His career was finally ended by a back injury while at Brackley and he became a milkman in Towcester.

The club was informed this morning that Dave had passed away at his home in Wiltshire. He is survived by his four daughters Kerry, Michelle, Hayley and Vicki.
