Thomas is the only member of Adam Murray’s squad to pick up a niggling injury from pre-season training and Stags are taking no chances.

“He is still a little bit sore,” said Murray. “He has a little bit of tendonitis, so we are having to be very cautious with him. We want him right for the start of the season.

“Fortunately Jack’s general fitness is very good, so we are not too worried he is going to have to play catch-up because he is quite a fit lad.

“As long as get the injury settled down, he will be fine. But we won’t be risking him at Matlock.”

Murray said yesterday that training was going very well.

“We had another good training session this morning and the lads are looking sharp,” he said.

“We worked them into the ground yesterday all day. They left about 6pm last night. They started at 9am today. It’s now half two and we are ready to go again at 3pm.”
