Leivars leads the way as home club stage top class boxing show

Mansfield ABC’s recent dinner show at the John Fretwell Sporting Complex proved to be a fantastic advertisement for amateur boxing, writes David Statham.

Mansfield ABC was represented by 11 boxers, and all put in impressive performances and matched their opponents punch for punch.

Star boxer Nico Leivars got the club off to winning ways when he put in an accomplished performance to defeat Moss Side’s Connor Tudsbury over three rounds, Paul Mellors had too much for Joe Lyons of Pegasus BC and Mansfield debutant Joe Brailsford made light work of David Durose from Bulwell, busting his nose and stopping him in the first round.

Mansfield’s Jamie Haywood was too fast and accurate for Prince Briar, battling Paul Reeves lost narrowly to Danny Smith of Chesterfield, Perry Walters was stopped against sharp-shooting opponent Christopher Sharp, Henry Rooney lost an extremely close decision to Nechells Green’s Martin Goldsmith-Ryan.

Also, debutant Adam Braddock slipped to a points defeat against talented Lee Syer, of GrimsbyBC, Jack Corbett pushed opponent Billy Rashid of Splash Fit BC all the way and was unlucky to not be given the decision and Ben Wright was outscored by Jack Willmott.

Hard-hitting heavyweight Edgar Barkovskis ended the night in style, winning on points in a bruising battle against Jake Hucklesby of Pegasus.

Among the crowd were the the Miss Mansfield finalists.

All the boxers train at Body and Soul gym two or three times a week.
