MANSFIELD Woodhouse’s wheelchair badminton star Paula Robinson is celebrating a hat-trick of gold medals in the Welsh leg of the Four Nations Parabadminton Championships at the Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff.
In all 69 participants took part across four categories - Learning Disabilities (LD), Dwarves, Standing and Wheelchair.
The standard of the wheelchair players was one of the most competitive and Nottingham Blazers pair Paula with Notingham’s Owen Kilburn got off to a great start as they took gold in the wheelchair mixed doubles final, with a comfortable win over Gobi Ranganathan (Herts, England) and Fiona Christie (Scotland) 21/11, 21/14.
Paula was then paired up with Fiona Christie in the absence of fellow club mate Bernadette O’Driscoll, to produce another win over young Devon pair Hannah Baldwin and Katherine Last 21/10, 21/11 in the ladies’ doubles combined final.
That was matched by Owen in the men’s doubles combined final with partner Gobi Ranganathan as they beat arch-rivals David Follett and Rowan Crossman from Devon 21/15, 21/17.
The ladies’ combined and men’s class two singles finals were much more closely fought as both Paula and Owen had to dig deep overcoming their opponents in three games, Paula defeating Nicola Crow (Wales) 11/21, 21/16, 21/12 and Owen beating Phillip Tew (Bucks,England) 21/13, 24/26, 21/14.
