AFC Emley came to Carnarvon Street and showed why they are among the promotion favourites in a very competitive Baris Northern Counties East League Division One and gave the host a harsh lesson of what is needed if they want to be in the mix themselves.
The visitors simply dominated the game and were a level above the Tevie Boys on this showing, always being in control as the Tevie Boys failed for the second game running to meet the standards they have set this season. May be that was due to the work rate of the visitors who were quick to close down when they lost possession and seized on the far too many errors from the home side.
On 20 minutes the visitors created their first opening when an excellent ball from Schofield found the timely run of Ashley Flynn, but Herring was alert and quick of his line to block bravely at the feet of the striker. The rest bite was short lived and 3 minutes later Emley took a deserved lead when Roberts broke down the Teversal right before playing a well weighted ball in behind the home defence where Pearson had covered well only for his attempted clearance to hit Levi Maturine with the ball dropping nicely for the striker who settled himself before placing the ball past the advancing Herring.
Teversal had possible their best spell after the goal with Jez Mitchell and Dave Cockerill working hard up front for the host, but Cyrus and Ingham were up to the task and kept the pair at bay. Well that was until the 29th minute when the Tevie Boys pulled level when Colin Cockerill had the time and space to pick out a wonderful 40 yard pass that sent Jez Mitchell in behind the Emley defence with the striker showing pace and composure to slot home past Herriott to level.
But instead of building on pulling level, Teversal pressed the self-destruct button when failing to deal with a free kick that was lumped into the 18-yard box, but credit to Cyrus who didn’t give up on the over it pass and recovered it to lay back to Haigh who controlled the ball before turning back inside to calmly pass the ball out of the reach of the desperate efforts of Herring in the Teversal goal in the 31st minute. The lead was not threatened in the closing stages of the first period with Jamie Hudson having the task of charging his troops to try an resurrect what was yet another under par performance.
It looked like the Tevie Gaffer’s pep talked had worked with Meachan forcing Herriott to make what turned out to be his only save at the near post in the opening minute of the second period and all though the host huffed and puffed they failed to put their competent visitors under any real threat.
On the hour mark the gulf in class was shown in the score-line when Ashley Flynn produced a clinical strike after being found by Haigh. Six minutes later an identical goal again finished by Flynn made it 4-1 with Kenworthy this time being the architect that undone the home defence down the right flank.
Eli Mitchell carved out an opening by getting the by-line and pulling back to Tobin who from 8 yards had the time and space to finish but put the effort went woefully wide of the target and summed up the Teversal performnce. In stark contrast at the other end Flynn was denied a hat-trick with a stunning drive that Herring matched with an equally impressive save to keep the score-line down to 4-1.
Emley were good value for their win, with the Tevie Boys now having to answer a few questions, dust themselves down and try and pick up their early season form to keep their hopes of improving on their last season’s record breaking efforts.
Teversal have an early opportunity to pick themselves up when they entertain Yorkshire Amateur at home in League action on Tuesday night (25/09/2012), with a 7.45pm kick off at Carnarvon Street.
