On a wet and windy day AFC Mansfield got back to winning ways with a resounding 9-0 thumping of Worsborough Bridge Athletic in the NCEL Division One on Saturday.

Hat-tricks from Man of the Match Danny Williams and captain Dean Rick led the way with goals from Craig Mitchell, Adon Spencer and Sam O’Malley completing the scoring.

The visitors didn’t help themselves when after just three minutes Callum Beaumont received his marching orders for a late tackle on Luke Jeffs.

Playing with just 10 men for most of the match was going to be ‘a bridge too far’ for the away side, and so it proved.

Charlie Bryan in the visitor’s goal made his first save on 10 minutes in what was going to be a busy day for the Worsborough keeper. He turned Craig Mitchell’s drive around the post after Rick had got behind the visitors back line. Bryan was perfectly placed to collect Danny Williams volley from the resulting corner.

AFC went in front on 24 minutes, Mitchell advancing down the right flank and delivering a low cross that Rick fired home at the far post.

The Bulls doubled their lead on 29 minutes, Rick turning provider with another low cross for Danny Williams to slot home from eight yards.

Bryan was in the right place when Rick brought down a 30 yard pass from Naylor, turned and fired at goal from just outside the box, the keeper making the save look easy.

Bryan was again in action, this time beating away a vicious Ryan Williams drive from the edge of the box.

Danny Williams doubled his tally on 42 minutes with a well placed drive from the edge of the box past the fingertips of a fully stretched Bryan.

Rick made it four just before the break, with the visitors falling apart as three players lined up to get the finishing touch to a Ryan Williams cross, the captain getting there first to slot the ball home from five yards.

Mark Dudley replaced Chris Timons at half-time, manager Rudy Funk having one eye on next week’s FA Vase game and this one seemingly put to bed.

Ryan Poskitt got the second half started with a curling effort that was always going wide.

But the Bulls got their fifth on 58 minutes. A superb run down the right flank from Ryan Williams, saw his cross found Rick, who in turn laid the ball off to Danny Williams to drive home from eight yards for his hat-trick.

Sam O’Malley went close on 72 minutes firing just wide from a Rick pass and three minutes later another great ball from Rick found Mitchell, who drilled the ball underneath Bryan from 12 yards.

The seventh goal was probably the move of the game. The home side switched the ball from left to right deep in their own half where Spencer delivered a superb 40 yard curling through ball into the path of Rick. The striker took a touch, drew the keeper and calmly slotted it past him for his hat-trick.

Phil Buxton saw his effort turned around the post by Bryan. But, from the resulting corner O’Malley volleyed home a superb Ryan Williams delivery for number eight.

Rick had efforts saved on 83 and 85 minutes before Spencer bundled home another great corner from Ryan Williams on 87 minutes.

A flurry of chances went begging at the death, Rick, Mitchell, Naylor and O’Malley all either having efforts saved or fired wide as the 10th goal eluded them.

The Bulls will now focus on next Saturday when they enter the FA Vase in the second round with a home tie against Alsager Town from the North West Counties Premier Division, a step higher than AFC Mansfield.
