AFC Mansfield return to winning ways

AFC Mansfield got back to winning ways with a hard fought 3-2 victory at Rossington Main on Saturday.

Goals from Ryan Williams and Sam O’Malley secured the win with an own goal from Brad Billam making up the tally.

It was perhaps no surprise given the strong swirling winds that two own goals were scored with the ball often difficult to bring under control.

The game didn’t start well for the visitors with a hopeful wind assisted cross hitting Jason White’s bar on seven minutes for an early let off.

AFC then began to create chances with Dean Rick firing wide on nine minutes and Craig Mitchell having an effort well saved by Rich Watson in the home goal. Phil Buxton went close from 25 yards before Williams putting his shot wide of the mark from 12 yards.

The misses proved costly when Matt Ellis looped a header past Jason White to put Rossington in front on 34 minutes.

AFC pushed hard and Williams had a far post effort blocked off a Rick low cross and Sam O’Malley had a drive cleared off the line.

But they were level on 40 minutes with Brad Billam getting the final touch to send the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble.

The second half was 11 minutes old when Ryan Williams put AFC in front with his 15 yard effort hitting the net despite Watson getting a hand to the power drive.

At the other end White tipped a superb free-kick from Shaun Pendleton over the bar and again came to the rescue on 70 minutes with an outstanding one handed save from an Ellis header.

The Bulls thought they had the game wrapped up on 76 minutes when Ryan Williams ghosted past the right back and delivered a pin-point ball to the feet of O’Malley.

The striker opened up his body and finished clinically at the near post.

Rossington were having none of it and pushed forward and were rewarded when Craig Mitchell headed into his own net on 84 minutes to set up a nervous finish for The Bulls.

But they stood firm and weathered the additional six minutes the referee found and saw the game out.
