FOOTBALL: Clipstone left to sit and wait for trophy confirmation

CLIPSTONE Welfare can only sit and wait now to see if a season that promised so much ends without silverware.

This week they lost 3-0 to Clifton in the Baris League Challenge Cup semi-finals.

And, having completed their league programme, the Black Dragon North Division leaders know Dronfield Town, Thoresby Colliery Welfare and Westella & Willerby have games in hand and can overtake them.

Dronfield Town convincingly defeated visitors Kinsley Boys, winning 5-1, and could do the double. They are now only seven points behind Clipstone with four games in hand.

The crucial game will be on 19th May, when they entertain fourth placed Westella & Willerby, who also have a great chance of taking the title.

Westella are 10 points behind Clipstone but have five games in hand, after their game with Glapwell was postponed.

Another club playing catch-up are Thoresby CW, who dropped two vital points, being held to a goalless draw at Ollerton Town.

Dave Winter’s men went into the game on the back of 12 goals in two games whilst Lee Tryner’s men had just beaten Welbeck 8-0.

Despite the high-scoring promise of the game, the two teams cancelled each other out and, even after Ollerton saw Sean Fulcher dismissed for two bookable offences, nobody could find the opening and decisive goal.

However, this result takes Thoresby into third place and they could have a great say in the final leading positions while the title is not out of their reach.

Bottom of the table DFS Welbeck Welfare secured their first point of the season, sharing four goals at Phoenix, Craig Gibbons and Dale Peer their goalscorers

l The Black Dragon South Division title seems destined for Basford United who, with two games to play, only need three points to ensure their success.

They ended the challenge of South Normanton Athletic, in style, gaining a convincing 5-0 win at Lees Lane.

Second-placed Pinxton did not have a game and need to win their last two games and hope Basford United slip up to take the title.
