A bad day at the office was endured by Shirebrook Town, who appeared to go down without a fight at home to Eccleshill United in Division One of the Toolstation Northern Counties East League.

In their second successive defeat, after a highly promising sequence of victories, Shirebrook were beaten 2-0 by their fellow mid-tablers, who hail from Bradford.

And it was hardly the result they were looking for as they prepare for their big FA Vase clash this Saturday at home to West Midlands outfit Sporting Khalsa, who were featured in BBC TV’s Fa Cup, First Round draw programme on Monday night.

In front of a crowd of 86, Shirebrook looked sluggish from the off as Eccleshill, without an away win this season, started the game well, applying plenty of pressure and forcing home goalkeeper Dean into a couple of smart saves in the early minutes.

The first meaningful attack created by the hosts led to a through ball for Anthony Rowley, but the visiting ‘keeper was equal to his shot.

Eccleshill’s bright football paid off in the 20th minute when they took the lead through Adam Turner. And as they looked to double their advantage, they went close several more times as the first half wore on. Indeed Shirebrook went in at half-time fortunate to trail by just the one goal because the visitors should have been out of sight.

The second period was no different, and Eccleshill duly bagged their second goal in the 55th minute when Brett Catley rose highest to head home from a corner. The Yorkshire side continued to carve out some chances without extending their lead, but they still ran out comfortable winners.

The closest Shirebrook went to a consolation goal came when Matty Ord burst through, only for his shot to smack against a post, which summed up a day to forget.

The most curious facet of the game was that it was Shirebrook’s fifth defeat in nine matches at Langwith Road so far this season. And yet away from home, they are unbeaten in seven, four of which they have won.
