BEN Hutchinson and Anto Flood both made a great start to their bids for Mansfield Town contracts as they found the net in last night’s 4-0 friendly win at Eastwood Town.
Former Arnold Town, Celtic and Middlesbrough striker Hutchinson bagged a double and looked a class act while League of Ireland goal ace Flood also found the net in an industrious performance.
With Paul Connor and Louis Moult leaving Field Mill last week, Stags are in the market for a striker or two on 1st January and Cox admitted first impressions of last night’s on-trial pair were good ones.
“Both of them did well for different reasons,” said boss Paul Cox. “Both of them looked sharp and gave me food for thought. Both showed glimpses of what they can do.
“Anto is here until Friday but I hope we may be able to extend that while Ben is here for a couple of weeks so we can run the rule over them.
“It is early days yet. Two training sessions and a game, you can sometimes read too much into it.
“But I go back a long way with Ben to his Academy days when he came through with Lindon Meikle. Since then he has played in the Premiership and the Champions League.
“Now he has come here to and maybe we can help him if need be to kickstart his career again.
“It is very easy as a young man to make mistakes and I think Ben would openly admit he has made a few. But he has still only just turned 24, yet with the clubs he has been to you would judge him to be more like 20-31.
“He has the ability to get back to where he wants to be with his career. But the do that he has to graft, and he has to sit, listen and learn.”
