On this day 46 years ago, Mansfield Town humbled Southport 5-0 in Division Three.

The game marked the debut of Duncan McKenzie, on loan from Nottingham Forest and who would later go on to represent Leeds and Everton in a successful career.

Upon arriving at Field Mill, McKenzie told the Chad: “I think I have made a very good move.

“Stags are possibly the best (team) in the division.”

With regards to this demolition of Southport, McKenzie’s brace was only outdone by Dudley Roberts’ hat-trick - the first by a Town player for five years!

Roberts scored his treble in an 18-minute spell in the first half.

He turned in Sandy Pate’s cross on 10 minutes, headed Goodfellow’s corner home on 13 and then on 28 he pounced on a poor backpass to complete his excellent haul.

McKenzie then grabbed his quickfire brace to complete the resounding win for the resurgent Stags.

Stags: Brown, Pate, Walker, Quigley, Boam, Waller, Partridge, McKenzie, Jones, Roberts, Goodfellow.
