MANSFIELD Town fans will get a first glimpse of new manager Paul Cox’s 11 summer signings tonight when the squad play their first proper pre-season fixture at Conference North Nuneaton Town (7.45pm).
Starting with three centre forwards in a 4-3-3 formation, Cox intends to play largely two separate Stags sides in each half to get his players at least 45 minutes apiece under their belts ahead of Friday’s visit of Notts County, though some may stay on longer.
Cox, who hopes to complete the signing of a high quality former Championship centre half tomorrow, said: “Their lads will see a scalp tonight and should provide us with a good test.
“There will be nowhere for us to hide and it will be like going up to Barrow on a Tuesday night when it’s slinging it down with rain. It will test their mentality.
“We are not going to go stupid, but I want the game played at proper match tempo and not like a testimonial.
“I want these games to pick holes in us and highlight problems before we start the season. If we were the finished product straight away tonight I would be very surprised. In fact I’d be in line for the England job!”
