Despite the disappointment of not making the play-offs, one Mansfield Town player had plenty to celebrate last night after Chesterfield loanee striker Mani Dieseruvwe scored his first ever League goal in the 1-1 draw with Barnet.

Diesweruvwe struck on the half-hour with an unstoppable finish from 12 yards and said: “I was very pleased to get off the mark as you could tell by the celebration.

“It’s been coming. I’ve just been trying to work hard in every game, and some of them have been scrappy. Luckily today the ball just bounced for me in the box and I managed to put it away.

“It meant a lot. I’ve been looking for that elusive first League goal for a while now, the whole of this season.

“There was nowhere else it was going to end once I got that chance. It was my first real shot for the club and thankfully it went in.”

Stags needed to make it four wins on the bounce to keep their play-off hopes alive but failed to put away a physical Barnet side, who wasted time as often as possible and also looked dangerous going forward.

“The boys put in everything,” he continued. “It was a difficult game. They came here to slow the game down and try to get their long throws involved. That was their main threat to be fair.

“We tried to get the ball forward as quick as possible and get onto second balls. We wanted to create a tempo and atmosphere. Unfortunately we just couldn’t get the win.”

An uncertain future now awaits the 21-year-old with his contract at Chesterfield up this summer. But he has enjoyed his loan spell with Stags.

“I think I’ve done okay,” he said. “I have tried to work as hard as I can and the gaffer has given me a lot of faith which I am very happy with and just want to repay them and score as many goals as I can. I’d like at least two more if possible.

“There’s only a couple more games left now, but I’ve enjoyed my time here and I have put in 100 per cent for the team.”
