Stags appeal against Naylor red card

MANSFIELD Town have appealed against Tom Naylor’s sending-off in Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Gateshead.

A panel will view DVD footage of the tackle this afternoon but, if they uphold the referee’s decision, Naylor faces an extra game ban, meaning he will sit out the next four games.

Naylor seemed to win the ball as he went in hard on Yemi Odibade, but referee Stephen Smith showed an immediate red card to which Naylor reacted furiously.

“I watched the DVD yesterday and believe it was an absolutely magnificent tackle,” said Cox.

“It was a ‘proper’ tackle, though some referees may have been a bit frightened and booked him these days for intent as he flew in at 100mph – it was a strong tackle.

“But he won the ball. I showed it to Steve Barker (Stags chief executive) and he agreed it looked a perfectly good tackle.

“The referee though he jumped into it but Tom definitely plays the whole of the ball.

“Tom’s record speaks for itself. He hardly ever gets booked, let alone sent off. He is not malicious in any way. So I am hoping some common sense prevails and they make the right decision.”
