Early double salvo leaves Stags U21s with too much to do

Conceding two goals in the first six minutes left Mansfield Town's U21s with a mountain to climb as they eventually lost 6-2 in their home Central League clash with Grimsby Town at Kirklington Road this afternoon.

Stags got off to a rocky start with Grimsby striking those two early goals and adding a third after 15 minutes.

James Baxendale, left out of the first team squad recently with personal problems, pulled one back just after the half-hour mark.

Jason Law gave Mansfield hope with a goal on 70 minutes, but Corbin Shires put through his own goal 10 minutes later to seal victory.

The visitors then added further goals on 82 and 86 minutes to emphasise their superiority.

Grimsby named a strong looking side, including Manchester United loanee keeper Dean Henderson plus Sean McAllister and Rhys Browne returning to competitive action after recovering from injury.

Former Stags star Craig Disley skippered the Mariners team, whose scorers were Scott Vernon (2), Browne (2) and Zak Mills.
