Stags new stadium plan
MANSFIELD Town could be in a new stadium next season if they failed to regain ownership of Field Mill from landlord Keith Haslam.
The club is embroiled in legal action with Haslam after challenging the legality of his ownership which was financially facilitated by a dividends issue to shareholders.
All along chairman John Radford has said he has a ‘Plan B’ up his sleeve, should he fail to win his legal challenge to Haslam’s ownership, and that plan was revealed to fans today in the match programme as a new ground.
Chad understands four different sites are being looked at.
The Stags would need a 10-year lease at a suitable ground by March 2012 to return to the Football League should Paul Cox’s players gain promotion on the pitch this season. They currently have a one-year lease to play at Field Mill.
“Many of you are intrigued to know about the ‘Plan B’ which we have had in the pipeline, should we be unable to acquire Field Mill from the current landlord,” said Radford in his programme notes.
“I am now in a position to reveal that Plan B is a proposal for us to move to a newly-built stadium. Such proposals have now been drawn up which would allow us to be promoted at the end of the season.
“This, however, could all be immaterial, if we can buy Field Mill from Mr Haslam – which has always been my preferred option.
“Having stated that, we will not be held to ransom by anyone, and such back-up plans are essential.
“I am feeling more confident about our future and further details will be announced through our usual streams of communication.
“I know this is a very important matter to all who hold Mansfield Town close to their hearts, and I intend to keep you up speed with the finer pieces of information as and when any developments are made.”
There was also good news for Stags fans, should the club remain at Field Mill as they may get to return to their traditional North Stand home, used in recent seasons for visiting fans on police and Safety Group Advisory Committee advice.
“We have had constructive discussions with the Safety Advisory Group, Police and local authorities to enable our fans to return to the North Stand,” said Radford.
“I intend to work closely with you (the fans) to carry out a survey to discover whether this would be a popular move.”
Stags chief executive Carolyn Still, who had been due to meet the press to explain the plans further, was unavailable for comment.

MDC have not been contacted about planning for a new stadium either. I suspect that John Radford may have made the announcement to speed up the legal issues with Keith Haslam; If the Stags were to move away from Field Mill and leave Haslam with the ground what could he do with it as MDC may not allow him to demolish and rebuild on the site (and does he have the money to do such a thing one has to ask). He could only put the ground up for sale as thats the only way he could make any money
