MANSFIELD Town again beat the weather with a 4-0 behind-closed-doors friendly win over neighbours Notts County in the plush surroundings of England’s St George’s Park facilities in Burton today.

Stags, who had already twice played this week to chalk up two away wins at Stockport and Southport when many other games fell to the snow and ice, arranged to face the Magpies on an superb undersoil heated surface.

The Notts side contained one or two first team names, but they were blown away by three second half goals as Mansfield played two different 11s in each half.

Matt Rhead (2), Lee Stevenson and Nick Wright all found the net and manager Paul Cox said: “Both 11s did really well in their respective halves. It was a really good run-out for the boys and important to stop us going rusty.

“Credit to us and Notts County to get this game on with so many frozen pitches with snow on them around the country. It was a good, physical game which is important as losing fitness and sharpness can quickly catch up on you.

“The facilities down there are on a different level. They are second to none. We have been training on rubbercrumb at Derby which is quite hard on the joints, so it was nice to get out on a grass pitch.

“Some clubs will not have played for 10-14 days so were are quite lucky to have been able to play those two away games this week.”

More good news for Stags was that centre half Exodus Geohaghon came through his 45 minutes without problem after his recent hamstring injury lay-off.

With no game scheduled for Saturday, Cox is now hoping to play, possibly against a League One club, away on Saturday behind-closed-doors to keep those fitness levels topped up for Tuesday’s planned away league game at Hereford United.
