Mansfield Town boss bemoans missed chances after FA Cup draw with minnows Slough
Stags v Slough Town
STAGS manager Paul Cox said he couldn’t have asked for anymore from his players after Saturday’s FA Cup First Round goalless draw with underdogs Slough at The One Call Stadium.
Cox added: “I couldn’t ask more of my players in that second half apart from scoring a goal.
“It was wave after wave of attack. Incessant pressure. But credit to Slough, they chucked everything in front of us.
“We should have taken one of our first half chances as it would have been a very different game then. It’s not rocket science. There was nothing more I could do apart from put the ball in the net myself.
“We were as offensive as we could be. I played with two centre forwards and two wingers and we passed the ball well.
“It was just one of those days. In the second half we hit the bar and Matt Green also got in the way of one right on the line.
“We were a bit sloppy in the first half and didn’t play with the tempo I expected of us. If we’d played like we played in the second half for the whole 90 minutes the result could have been different.”
Slough boss Steve Bateman said: “It has been a fantastic day for everybody concerned with Slough.
“We said before the game we were not coming here just to make up the numbers.
“Character and gutsy performance – we ticked all those boxes today.
“We expected Mansfield to have a lot of the territorial advantage.
“Mansfield played a direct game and that suited us. My back four are experienced and have played at a higher level. So the ball in the air was food and drink to my players.
“We rode our luck a bit but you expect that away to a club in the Conference who used to be in the Football League. I am pleased for everybody.
“In the replay we will get the ball down and show them we can play football as well.
“It will be a very different ground they are coming to now. They will be in the smallest changing room they’ve probably ever been in in their lives. It is like a railway carriage. But we will welcome them and have another go at it.”
