Craig Priest’s Mansfield Town blog: Hutchinson can replace Dyer and help complete Stags

Stags V Southport.

Stags V Southport.

At last, the victory Mansfield Town deserve. Ben Hutchinson’s second minute goal was the difference against Southport on Saturday.

I’ve been thinking about what’s made the difference in our turnaround of form. I think it’s finally finding someone to replace Ross Dyer, whose influence we’ve majorly missed.

Losing Ross was a huge dent to the way we play. What we’ve been looking for is someone that will ignite the fire put out by Dyer’s absence.

Matt Rhead, Jake Speight and Lee Stevenson have been tried around various formations but have been unsuccessful. Hutchinson I think is as close as we’ll come to getting the fire burning again.

Fair play, he’s not the same build of player as Ross but is a player that creates all around the pitch. He’ll drop deep into midfield find a pass and move into space to receive again.

He’ll jump for headers and make flick-on’s and, most importantly, get into goalscoring positions.

A lot of people wanted him released in the summer. However, Cox kept him here and was certainly right to do so, when players like Hutchinson get a consistent run they play with flare and confidence – a trait he’s capable of and one we need as November and December unfolds.

The reserve team has kept both he and Nick Wright fit and has also provided competitive action for them to form a partnership, I think we’re beginning to see it unravel to positively affect the first team now.

Naturally it’s at the expense of Green and Speight, both great players but, let’s be honest, don’t pair well together. Again the reserves can help rectify this as Wright and Hutchinson enjoy their stint as the favoured front too.

Slough tomorrow (Tuesday) is a tough game, but a must win. We’re back to winning ways – time for the away forms turn around now.
