Ex-Stags star stands in way of Bulls in FA Cup

AFC Mansfield eased past East Midlands Counties side Dunkirk 4-0 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup to set up a clash against former Mansfield Town star Liam Lawrence.

First half goals from Nick Guest and Phil Buxton were followed in the second period by Ollie Fearon’s ninth of the season and a Lynton Karkach finish at the Forest Town Arena on Saturday.

Two days later the Bulls were handed another home tie in the second qualifying round against Rushall Olympic.

The Evo-Stik Premier Division side, two steps above AFC Mansfield in the football pyramid, have Lawrence among their squad this season.

The Bulls took the lead after eight minutes when Nick Guest latched on to a Liam Marsden through ball and fired across Liam Mitchell from just inside the box. Guest limped off nine minutes later when a poor challenge left him unable to continue.

Substitute Jimmy Ghaichem found Craig Mitchell with a good cross, but the striker’s header hit the side-netting.

The Bulls doubled their lead on 35 minutes. Fearon’s shot was blocked and Phil Buxton volleyed home from 15 yards.

AFC thought they had a third goal on the hour when Plummer’s header from a Smythe corner was ruled out.

But eight minutes later Cameron Dear’s low drive was finished at the far post by Fearon before another Cameron Smythe corner was headed home by Karkach eight minutes from time.
