Shirebrook were without key central defenders Chris Timons and Lee Bowler, and a good Hemsworth side were quick to expose the weaknesses in visiting manager Gary Castledine’s reshuffled back line and midfield at the MDC Stadium as Hemsworth ran out 4-2 winners on Bank Holiday Monday.
However, it was a spirited performance from Shirebrook, particularly in the first half, and keeper Steve Boot was in fine form for the visitors.
And despite being under the cosh almost from the start, it was Shirebrook who took the lead from a fine solo effort by Michael Taylor on 27 minutes.
The lead only lasted three minutes, though, Iwan Heeley levelling the scores for Hemsworth on the half-hour.
The home side kept the pressure on after that, but the visitors somehow held out until half-time and Castledine must have been reasonably happy with the 1-1 scoreline going into the interval.
Nevertheless, Hemsworth were quick to put daylight between the sides after the break, scoring three goals and racing into a 4-1 lead inside the opening eleven minutes of the second half.
Skipper Andrew Hart made it 2-1 from the penalty spot on 48 minutes and Heeley grabbed his second to double the home side’s advantage five minutes later.
Jack Wakefield added another to open up a three goal gap on 56 minutes, and it looked all over bar the shouting at that stage for the visitors, although hungry Hemsworth continued to press afterwards.
Still, Shirebrook were by no means out of it and Jake Vernon made the score look deservedly more respectable when he pulled a goal back with just under ten minutes to go, with a sweet volley from the edge of the box.
Next Saturday Shirebrook are on the road once more, this time to Doncaster side Askern Villa, again for a 3 o’clock kick-off, before returning to Langwith Road the Wednesday after for a 7.45pm kick-off against another Doncaster outfit, Rossington Main
