A FOOTBALL scholarship scheme which aims to give teenagers the chance of taking up a variety of careers in the sport has been launched in the area.

The SR Elite Football Scholarship Programme will be based in the former squash centre at the back of Clipstone Welfare and will teach a range of educational and footballing skills to help school leavers aged between 16 to 18-years-old into sporting careers.

Courses involved in the programme include BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport, BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport, BTEC Level 3 Diploma, BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 1 & 2).

The scholarship, which is currently being run in other areas across the East Midlands, also features a wide range of football development programmes such as strength and conditioning advice, nutritional, health and lifestyle advice and FA Referee seminars.

There will also be the chance to play competitive trial matches against Premiership and Football League opposition and competitive matches in the English National College League as well as learn new FA approved coaching skills.

Simon Ward, the programme’s sports development manager, said: “Sport and education has the power to change the environment in which young people live, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can. Sport can create opportunity and life-changing moments.

“You do not have to be the greatest of footballers, there are opportunities out there for players of all different talents. This course gives people wonderful opportunities, we have had players go out to USA on scholarships and things like that. You really don’t know where the course could take you.

“The empahsis is on the youngsters and creating the opportunities for them to get into the sport that they love and do it for a career. We offer an all-round education as well as the chance to play football.

“This is a massive opportunity for people to find a path in life, the chance is out there.”
