Well the tears had finally dried from the play-off final loss and the Rams fans turned up in great numbers for the opening game of the season on Saturday.
A crowd in excess of 30,000 saw a hard fought win over newly-promoted Rotherham United.
The visitors made a game of it and left Derby very frustrated at times. Monday night saw The Rams win by two goals against a determined Carlisle side in the League Cup.
Despite dominating possession it was in the final third of the field that we failed to convert chances with great effect in both games.
The passing play and creating of chances were not quite in synch, but at this early stage of the season it’s good to get off to a winning start and shake off those cobwebs.
We got a first real look at some of our summer signings such as Cyrus Christie who impressed not only on Saturday, but also on Monday night at Carlisle in the League Cup.
Leon Best and Omar Mascarell made appearances with the latter coming on for Will Hughes on the hour mark on Saturday. Best had another few minutes towards the end of the Carlisle game.
Best is determined to make the most of this chance at the iPro. No one has ever doubted his talent, but it’s time for him to show people exactly what he us capable of.
I suspect that Mascarell will gradually get more game time whilst he adapts to the a English game. There’s no doubting his ability if scouting reports are to be believed.
Saturday we head to Sheffield and the Blue side of the city. Hillsborough is a favourite away day for many fans. Wednesday themselves have been out of the limelight for a good few years. After an initial period of struggle last season, Stuart Gray has steadied the boat.
Derby need to get on it and get back to the free scoring ways of last season.
