Former England star Steve Harmison ready to light up T20 game at Welbeck Colliery Cricket Club

ASHES hero Steve Harmison will head an array of ex-Test stars ready to light up Welbeck Colliery Cricket Club at a special T20 game next month.

The former number one-ranked bowler in the world will be part of an England Legends team that will also feature Strictly Come Dancing winner Mark Ramprakash, Paul Nixon and Alex Tudor, with more big names to be announced in due course.

They will take on a Welbeck side drawn from a mixture of first teamers, youngsters and guest players in an eagerly-awaited match on Friday 29th August at the John Fretwell Complex on Sookholme Road.

An action-packed schedule of events will run from 12 noon ‘til late, with a junior kwik cricket tournament and a corporate hospitality three-course meal preceding the main match and a disco and live entertainment to follow it.

The day, sponsored by Greene King, has been organised with the help of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) and all proceeds will be invested back into the Warsop Sporting Trust, the not-for-profit organisation which runs the community complex.

“To have a player at Welbeck such as Steve Harmison, who we all remember for helping England win the Ashes back for the first time in 18 years, is a huge honour,” said John Fretwell, who financed the building of the complex, which first opened in 2006.

“Mark Ramprakash has shown over the last two decades that he is no mean player – and he’s not too bad on the dance floor either! It promises to be quite a day’s entertainment.”

Welbeck hosted a similar event against a PCA Masters side last summer where more than 1,000 spectators attended.

Corporate hospitality guests were entertained by the likes of Devon Malcolm, Adam Hollioake and Mark Ealham, who also took time out to coach youngsters. “It was a terrific day in 2013, both for the kids who had a day with the stars they will never forget and the spectators who saw some entertaining, high-calibre cricket,” said Mark Waterfield, centre manager at the John Fretwell Complex.

“The money we raised last year has not only helped us put on more courses to introduce young players to the game, but it has also enabled us to improve the ground that is open for everyone to use.”

Tickets for the England Legends game are on sale now. Adults are priced at £5 in advance (£7 on the day), 11 to seven-year-olds are £3 (£5 on the day) and under 11s free.
